Jupiter - when we moved there in 1962, it was little more than a wide spot in the road. My father was owner of Grator Gator (on US Highway 1), and Big Dollar (on Indiantown Road). He was well known in the community at that time - Ernie Osborn. We had moved from Minnesota to Florida, and my mother was horrified by the spiders, chameleons and snakes. We lived on Tequesta Drive, long before much construction had taken place. I graduated from Jupiter High School in 1965, with a graduating class of 99! I remember Dubois Park on the river, across from the south end of Jupiter Island. I remember when Perry Como built his house on the point in the Loxahatchee River and upset all his neighbors because his house blocked the view of the river from the other other houses. I remember traveling north up Jupiter Island just to get a peak at the big houses and estates, and being told that the Hobe Sound Police had radar and knew how long a car should take traveling up that road (don't know if that was true or not), I remember going to North of Hobe Sound to see the rocks, and go to the beach, I remember when the beach at Jupiter was a park, with no condo's or hotels on it, and the beach road from Jupiter to Juno was open to all and we could park along the road and use the beach. There was a place in the Loxahatchee / Intracoastal Waterway we called the Bathtub - the rocks formed a small area where the water stayed calm and warm, and the bottom was the softest sand - not too far from the Lighthouse. I took driver's ed and learned to drive around the town of Jupiter and Tequesta - I don't know if they are even separate anymore! Tommy Brown's father was postmaster of Jupiter. I remember when we had so much rain that the mayor's office had an alligator on it's patio - there was a photo in the Jupiter paper - and I remember when Tequesta had it's own paper. The founder and editor of the Jupiter paper referred to the founder of the Tequesta paper as "the dumpy dame with a camera"! (No names given here, please) Life was so much more simple then than it is now, and I am sure that my memories are so much sweeter than what really happened! Kate Amador (formerly Kathy Osborn)

"The 1772 Virginia act to improve the Potomac was followed in 1784 by the incorporation of George Washington's Patowmack Company to build a canal around Great Falls and open the western Ohio lands directly to Potomac River shipping. Work on the canal began in 1785. By 1790 Matildaville at the Great Falls was chartered and Conn's Ferry established above the Falls at the site of the present Riverbend Park. Conn carried materials for construction of the Seneca Lock. The Patowmack Canal was completed in 1802 and functioned significantly as an inland waterway trade route uniting east and west. In 1826 the canal company dissolved and its charter passed to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company. In 1814 President James Madison and his wife Dolley, fleeing the British and the burning of Washington, travelled over the rolling road through Matildaville to Conn's Ferry and escaped into Maryland."

I lived in Jupiter from 1969 to 1984. When I first moved, Jupiter was a very small town and when I moved it was quite large. Just visited again last October and could not believe it! When I moved to Jupiter in '69, I applied for a job with the police department - At the time I applied, Glenn Mayo was the chief and only officer! My wife had grown up in Jupiter, graduating in 1966 (Elaine Hopkins). Her dad was minister of First Southern Methodist Church and founded the Jupiter Christain School (Rev. George Hopkins). I worked for the Jupter Post Office from 1973 until I transfered up here to Pa in 1984. I am now retired. I was also a volunteer and EMT with North County First Aid Squad. I have many, many fond memories of Jupiter!!

This site is tribute to my Grandmother Alice C. Raulerson-Horne she grew up
in Geneva,Florida on the Raulerson Homestead on Lake Harney. Hello to all my
relatives and family that reside in Jupiter. I lived on Indian Town Road in
1946 with GrandPa and Grandma Horne. Mom and I resided there while my father
Ken Horne repaired his Radio Repair shop that had been damaged in a recent
hurricane. Mom and I shared our time with my Great Grandma Virginia
Raulerson. I remember the happy times we had big family dinners and Grandpa
had brought in a huge treasure of "swamp cabbage" and oysters. The oysters
were still in their rock. Grandma baked them and each had a section. We were
handed a hammer and screw driver to retrieve the shells full of tasty bits.
We also were amused by the crabs that tried to escape the pot of boiling
water. Grandma had her own row boat and had a special spot to find the
oysters. Grandma would often tell stories of her childhood and exciting
adventures of living along the Okeechobee. One story she told was a boat
trip with her father W.B.Raulerson. They got to the middle of Lake Harney
and the motor would not start. Impressed with her dad's frustration and
anger she said, "Make it start PaPa. Cuss It!. Grandma always laughed and
would tell other adventures of her life in West Palm Beach.
She was the wife of Kenneth M.Horne,Sr. and resided in Jupiter over 75 years
and celebrated their 75th Wedding anniversary.. Alice has given lectures all
over Florida about her knowledge of Native Flora and the importance of its
protection, as well as the protection of the sea coast and all sea animals.
Numerous photos and articles have appeared in the local newspapers, paying
tribute to her dedicated spirit.I am the daughter of their oldest son Ken
Horne,Jr. who attends the Annual Pioneer Coffee held in Jupiter. The Horne
family lived on Pennock Point and several children still reside there. I
have a collection of her research and family photos.Alice and Ken were
married at the Congregational Church, West Palm Beach by Rev.C.H. Pettibone.
They are found on the 1920 census for Jupiter. They are buried in the
Tequesta Cemetery. Alice was active in the "Mile of Beauty" and other
projects that placed Historical Markers for local cemeteries, etc.

We moved her in the late 70's - we opened up the local Ice Cream store - Carvel. I remember when if we were running behind it was ok that you got stuck at the tracks or the bridge, people would laugh and understand, it was just part of living here, and we all loved it,now they get mad. If we were skipping school the teacher actually came up to Corners (The corner to the south just after Carlin Park)because we were always natually at the beach, and got us. Everyone Stopped at Wallys donuts - they had the best donuts I've ever tasted still till today. (they were in the strip center across from where Ale House is now)If you got pulled over by one of the 8-10 Jupiter Cops - your parents knew before you got home. I remenber riding my horse into town to the beach and nobody cared.
THings were different then - I graduated Jupiter High School in 1984, and I can never think of a better place to have grown up.

My husband and I came to Jupiter in 1969, He was the principal for Dr.George Hopkins founder of Jupiter Christian School. My son, Michael loved Jupiter as we all did. We cried when we left in 1981.
We lived in the old house that was beside the First Southern Methodist Church, which used to be their parsonage. We also worked at Berean Christian School for several years and then back to JCS, before moving here to Raleigh, NC. I believe I had some of the best friends while living in Jupiter that I have ever had. My best friend lived in Indiantown and then later in Tequesta. That was the best time in my life, loving the students and parents from both schools. We moved to Whitney Drive off of Center Street or Indiantown Road. The Moschera family , Gladys, Alden, who had a place near the tracks, where he fixed everything with a motor; Their children were Tim Trina and an older boy that I can't recall his name right now. They welcomed us and showed us the life of Jupiter on the water, beside the water, and riding in their blue DuneBuggy.
I loved every minute of being at the beach at Carlin Park. My son and I just about lived there in the summer when school was out. Friends and I would go and just spend the day with our children. The sights were great , morning noon or at night watching the Sea Turtles lay their eggs and then go right back into the water. We were showing some visiters this sight when we were about to give up and my husband was walking backward at the ocean edge and he fell over the biggest sea turtle I ever saw. We all laughed even though you needed to be quiet so you did not scare the turtles while laying her eggs. His legs, and a flashlight were all we saw going up into the air.
Our school children have kept up with us from way back then. Some have come to visit and some who still live there call now and then.
Two brothers whom we loved dearly, have really stayed in touch. One still lives there and the other is in PA. but returns regularly to see his family members. They and the other wonderful young people who have been in touch have made Jupiter even more special. My husband died in October. I have dreamed of coming and staying at the beach where the Holiday Inn was when we lived there. I still may make it for a vacation to my town of Jupiter and My Ocean. I must make it personal because I love it still.Beauty and down home kindness and small town living, and big hearts. There are so many good friends there in Jupiter and West Palm Beach. Some who will never leave my heart . Some precious children who are all grown up and probably remember going to Annie English for fresh produce at their stand on Indiantown road, and so many people and places that just keep popping into my head. There are so many touching and funny stories in my heart about Jupiter! The children I taught here wanted to hear more stories about Jupiter. I taught for a total of 40 years and had to retire from a school here. I miss teaching, like I miss Jupiter, Florida. Thanks Jupiter, and thanks to my Lord who gave me this opportunity to meet Jupiter and its people.

Growing up there was great. I now have a greater appreciation of its unique setting after moving away in 1988. The best times a young person could have there was cetainly by boat and next to the water. Hurricane David was a big event back in the early eighties. Remember when there was camping a Burt Reynolds Park??? Delivering the Jupiter Courier-Journal through Tequesta and waiting tables at Harpoon Louie's Restaurant were the beginnings of my work experience. The best part of Jupiter is that my parents are both still there ( Bill and Judie Wood) and savoring the history of our family living there from the early 1950's when the phone book had 1 page and it was ok to water ski in the inlet.
