Jupiter Police Department

K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit is comprised of specially trained police dogs and their police officer handlers. The use of canines is imperative in the fight against crime and provide protection for officers and the community. The K-9's utilize their indispensable abilities of smell, sight, speed, and agility in tracking and apprehending felony suspects, in locating missing persons and conducting area/building searches.

On July 21, 2010 a 3-month old bloodhound  puppy was donated to us by The Jimmy Ryce Center for Victims of Predatory Abduction.  Our community submitted hundreds of name suggestions which were narrowed down to five.  We asked you to vote from the five and over 2,000 votes were received!  We are proud to announce that the name "Sherlock" received the most votes.  Sherlock was officially introduced by Chief Frank Kitzerow at our National Night Out event on August 3rd.  On behalf of Chief Frank Kitzerow and the Jupiter Police Department, we would like to thank everyone who submitted their vote to name our newest K-9 Unit member.

Sherlock will spend the next year-and-a-half being trained to help find missing children, missing Alzheimer's patients and track criminals.  Bloodhounds have a million times the scent capacity of humans.  They can follow the scent trail of a person they are started on just as humans can follow, with their eyes, footprints in wet sand.  The vehicle and equipment needed for Sherlock was purchased by criminals through Asset Forfeiture Funds.

The K-9 Unit responds to requests for assistance from Jupiter Officers, requests from smaller adjacent jurisdictions, and State and Federal agencies. The dogs and their handlers participated in numerous area searches, building searches, tracks, searches for narcotics, and explosives.

The Unit also conducted demonstrations for various school groups, civic organizations, the Citizens Police Academy, and the Junior Police Academy.
