DO NOT leave your doors unlocked or open, even for a short time. Most would-be burglars will go from place looking for unlocked or open doors.
DO NOT leave your windows open or unlocked while
away form home. An open window is an invitation for a burglar to come in and
help himself.
DO NOT hide a spare key outside of your house.
Most burglars know exactly where to look and find it. Consider giving a spare
key to a trusted neighbor as an alternative. It's much safer.
DO NOT put personal identification information
on your key ring. This way, if you lose your keys, they cannot be traced to
your residence. It is always best in the event that you do lose your keys, that
you change the cylinders in your locks immediately.
DO NOT leave valuables in the open, or where
they can be seen through a window or door. This is an invitation for a
potential burglar to enter your home or car. Most burglars will go from house
to house and look into windows for just such an opportunity before they enter a
house or vehicle.
DO NOT put valuables or you purse in the trunk
of your car while it is parked in plain sight. A burglar may see this and
break into the car to open the trunk.
DO leave some outside lights on at night. A
light makes your home or vehicle an undesirable target for a burglar.
