The Jupiter Open Space Program
 Jones Creek Hammock

JonesCreekHammock185

  • Acquired: July 1987
  • Location: North side of Toney Penna Drive, west of Military Trail.
  • Size: 20 Acres
  • Cost: Property was transferred to the town in exchange for residential development density rights.
  • Property Description: The Hammock was added to the Open Space Program in 2006.  It was restored and opened for public access in 2007.  Located behind the North County Aquatic Complex, the site features parking, a nature trail and a board walk.  The diversity of ecosystems found in the Hammock makes it a very significant place.  The Hammock boasts an interesting mix of four different upland and wetland plant communities: the pine flatwoods terrain, a mangrove swamp, cypress slough, and oak hammock.  At the historic headwaters of Jones Creek is the cypress slough, home to 400 year old cypress trees and many species of wildlife.  Sloughs are broad shallow channels with flowing water.  and not to be overlooked, of course, is the oak hammock.  This habitat rarely covers a very large area and is characterized by a scrubby, dense, low canopy forest of oaks, southern magnolia, and wild olive, with little understory other than palmetto.
