"The last battle of the Loxahatchee is finally over."
Commentary by Richard Procyk

After ten years of negotiations to change the name of the Riverbend Park to one of historic significance, the Palm Beach County Historic Resources Review Board voted in favor of the Counties proposal to change the name of 63 acres that included the Seminole Wars battlefields, to Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park.  The remainder of the park (620 acres) will carry its original name, Riverbend Park.

When the new park entrance is built the signage will indicate two parks: Riverbend Park and Richard_ProcykLoxahatchee River Battlefield Park. The two historic markers of Powell's and General Jesup's Battle will be located at the entrance of Loxahatchee Battlefield Field Park.

One hundred and seventy two years ago, the largest army ever assembled during the Second Seminole War, marched from Ft. Mellon (Sanford, Fl.) and headed south for the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter. The result was the two Battles of the Loxahatchee River which took place on January 15 and 24th , 1838.

These battlefields were "almost lost to history" as their locations remained a mystery until local historians re-discovered them. Although the battlefields were saved, they remained invisible because they were named after a trailer park of the 1960's.

Most residents had no idea that Palm Beach County had historic battlefields where men of three races fought and died for what they believed and for their freedom. The Seminoles, to protect their homeland, the Black Seminoles to remain free from slavery, and the US Army, Navy and Marines who had a duty to perform.

Its hallowed ground.

A short time ago, a newspaper headline read : "The Battle of the Loxahatchee-a Forgotten Sacrifice". With its new name, "Loxhatchee River Battlefield Park", all visitors and residents alike can be proud that American history was made here in 1838, and the men who gave their lives now can rest in peace.
