Mayor Karen J. Golonka is currently serving her sixth full term as mayor. She is an urban planner by education and occupation. A graduate of the University of Virginia, she has 2 years of master's education in urban planning and growth management/public administration, from FSU and FAU respectively.
Mayor Golonka considers herself very fortunate to live in a Town with wonderful natural assets, special character, and friendly people, and it is her goal to continue to preserve this "small town atmosphere" as our community grows. Her priorities include: Sound Planning & Balanced growth: Support quality growth that is beneficial for Jupiter's future, in keeping with our desired character. Strong growth management controls. Improved traffic planning: Ensure that new development does not overwhelm our roads. Environmental preservation: Work to guarantee, through acquisition or other means, preservation of our fast disappearing natural resources.Cultural and recreational opportunities: Provide a variety of activities desired by our residents. Economic stability: Government fiscal responsibility and diversified local economy, including small business retention.
Some specific goals include: Riverwalk and Inlet Village: Continue the planning to complete the 2 1/2 mile pedestrian walk along the water. Ensure that development is compatible with the character of this unique natural area and enhance the recreational opportunities associated with it. Abacoa: See that Abacoa builds out as envisioned, focusing on workplace and commercial development to help the Town's economic growth.Indiantown Road: Review all development for impact on increased traffic congestion; implement traffic approaches that do not require widening of this road.
In 1999, she was honored by the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association as the state's "Exemplary Public Official of the Year" for her contributions to quality planning in Jupiter. Mayor Golonka has represented the Town on many countywide, regional and state organizations.
Her philosophy: "Take your work seriously, but not yourself."
